Halifax, Nova Scotia – Atlantic School of Theology (AST) is pleased to announce the appointment of the Rev. Dr. Heather McCance as President of AST, effective August 1, 2023.

Dr. McCance brings with her a wealth of experience and expertise in theological education and leadership. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), University of Waterloo, a Master of Divinity (M.Div) and Master of Theology (Th.M), Trinity College, University of Toronto, and a Doctor of Ministry (D.Min), Tyndale University. Dr. McCance has also served as the Director of Field Education and of Pastoral Studies at the Montreal Diocese and has over twenty years in parish ministry where she has developed deep intercultural experiences.

“The Rev. Dr. Heather McCance brings with her an extensive career in the teaching and study of leadership and holds the specific combination of qualifications and experiences AST was looking for. The continued success of our institution is critical to our community and to the students we serve, and Heather’s passion, character, and collaborative spirit will position AST for excellence in the years ahead.” – Dr. Peter Secord, Chair, AST Board of Governors.

As President, McCance will be responsible for the overall strategic direction and management of AST, including academic programming, fundraising, and community outreach. She will work closely with the Board of Governors, faculty, and staff to advance the institution’s mission of preparing individuals for ministry and service in the Church and society.

“The Presidential Search Committee sought a dynamic candidate to serve as President, who can work collaboratively to create a vision of adaptive, excellent, financially sustainable theological education. We sought an individual who will be a visionary leader in various institutions and organizations that AST is a part of, as well as an active participant in, for example, the lobster supper of the small, rural church. AST requires a person of deep faith, and we have found that in the Rev. Dr. Heather McCance.”  – Linda Yates, Chair, AST Presidential Search Committee.

Atlantic School of Theology is a fully accredited ecumenical institution of graduate theological education. It offers degree programs at the master’s level in theology, divinity, and pastoral ministry.
